Centec Extends Open Networking Support, Adding Microsoft SONiC Option to its 10GE Whitebox Switch Solution
Support for SONiC Networking Software Components Enables Centec ODM Partner EmbedWay to Deliver a Complete Open-Networking Platform Based on Centec switch silicon and Embedway hardware
SUZHOU, JIANG SU PROVINCE, CHINA, March 8, 2017 ― Centec Networks, a leading innovator of Ethernet switching silicon and SDN white box solutions, today announced it has further extended the open-networking operating system options for its 10GE whitebox switch solution with support for Microsoft’s Software for Open Networking in the Cloud (SONiC) collection of open-sourced software networking components. The integration is based on the Open Compute Project (OCP) Switch Abstraction Interface (SAI), which enables network infrastructure providers to pick and choose the optimal combination of hardware and software for their specific needs.
The first available product incorporating SONiC with Centec switching silicon is the ExSwitch6400 series whitebox solution from Centec ODM partner EmbedWay. The platform features Centec’s Golden Gate CTC8096 switch chip and uses SONiC to enable network operators to share the same software stack across hardware from multiple switch vendors. Announced in March 2016, SONiC has generated significant market interest as a powerful open-source whitebox software option.
“Centec has been tracking open-networking technology developments for a long time, and our support for SONiC is a key next step after contributing to the SAI definition using our silicon,” said Tao Gu, Vice President of Business Development with Centec. “SONiC support is also the final step in creating a complete, open-networking platform based on Centec switch silicon and Embedway hardware. We expect this jointly developed solution to help solve SDN challenges while delivering on open networking’s promise, including the freedom for customers to choose the hardware and network operating system solutions in each layer of the network solution stack that best meet their needs.”
Yousef Khalidi, Corporate Vice President, Microsoft Azure Networking said, “We’re very excited to see this new contribution to SONiC as we work to bolster a robust ecosystem of open source networking solutions. Centec is also an important contributor to the OCP Switch SAI project, which is a fundamental element of SONiC. We believe Centec’s support of SONiC will enhance Centec’s value proposition.”
Barry Li, Director of Network & Embedded Computing BU with Embedway said, “Offering SONiC support in collaboration with Centec is a key milestone for our whitebox switch project. As a new member of OCP, EmbedWay is quickly adopting the program’s open standards, and we will continue working with Centec to embrace the power of open networking and its growing value to our customers.”
The ExSwitch6400 series is a typical Top of Rack (ToR) switch that uses Centec’s Golden Gate switch chip to provide up to 48x10GE downlinks with40GE and native 100GE (4x25GE) uplink interfaces. It fully supports OCP hardware design guidelines, including OCP’s Open Network Install Environment (ONIE) for ODM and other bare metal switches. Centec’s Golden Gate silicon minimizes the ExSwitch6400 switch’s latency and power consumption, and the switch is optionally extensible with an Intel CPU card that ideally positions it for advanced applications such as network functions virtualization (NFV), hyper convergence, and security appliance applications.
“The ExSwitch6400 is one of most recent powerful switch designs with Intel’s high performance CPU,” said Tom Xiong, Marketing Manager of DRD with Intel. “We believe that SONiC support will broaden application scenarios for the ExSwitch6400 and help accelerate the adoption of open networking.”
Centec and Embedway will join the SONiC demonstration led by Microsoft at the OCP U.S. Summit 2017, March 8 and 9 in the Santa Clara Convention Center in Santa Clara, Calif.
Centec Networks provides innovative switching silicon and white box solutions that improve SDN deployment while empowering it for carrier, enterprise and data center networks.
